SBK LASIK
LASIK is an elegant, precise, microsurgical procedure used to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and in the near future presbyopia. To date, there have been over 50 million LASIK procedures performed worldwide. Laser vision correction has a 15 year track record of producing stable vision correction with rare sight-threatening complications. LASIK is currently the most popular form of vision correction surgery. The procedure reshapes the front surface of the eye (the cornea) by removing microscopic layers of corneal tissue with a laser beneath the corneal surface. In the "all laser LASIK" procedure, currently renamed iLASIK, a surface flap of corneal tissue is produced with a femtosecond laser and the corneal surface beneath the surface flap is reshaped with a second laser. After the reshaping procedure, the surface flap is gently replaced and begins to adhere within minutes. Because the surface of the cornea is never touched, functional vision recovery is rapid, permitting both eyes to be corrected at the same time. Simultaneous eye surgery minimizes convalescence with a rapid return to normal activity. Patients always have the option of sequential surgery (having each eye corrected separately, usually weeks apart), but most find simultaneous bilateral surgery most convenient. The laser that Dr. Benedetto uses, the VISX S4 IR has the broadest treatment parameters approved by the FDA. FDA approved treatments include custom wavefront generated protocols for moderate to high nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and the most recently approved custom monovision treatment for presbyopia. In addition, the VISX S4 IR possesses advanced safety features such as 3-D eye tracking, iris recognition, and pupil centroid shift which function to ensure proper positioning of the laser treatment and unique recognition of each individual.
